Hi, I'm Duncan.

I set up 'Tough Mountain', after guiding treks in the Italian Alps and Dolomite for several years. I'd become fascinated with the stories of allied soldiers and partisans who had been hiding out in the mountains and making the perilous crossing to neutral Switzerland. I've made one of the area's my home now, so this was an opportunity to turn a hobby into a living.

I've spent many seasons leading groups safely in the mountains between the Monta Rosa and Mont Blanc massifs, in the western Alps. I also work in the the Brenta Dolomite and the valleys of the Val Gardina and Val Pusteria in the main Dolomite range. In central Italy I spent 4 years living in the 'Abbruzi', one of the most remote areas of Italy, home to the Marsican brown bear and Wolves that live in the Majella and Abruzzo parks.

So all the trips on my website are built with first hand experience and knowledge. If you want to book then i'm the one who will be answering your enquiry.

an International Mountain Leader

I've drawn on many years of work as a trekking guide. I was a Mountain Leader in the Military (UK areas, Hartz Mountains & Allgua Alps, Germany) and even did a stint on one of the British Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue Teams. Between 1996 and 2011 I worked for a number of different organisations guiding groups on expeditions to  Morocco, Malawi, Namibia, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia, Romania, Spain and Northern India.

All my trips are protected by 'Campbell Irvine' Insurance - they specialise in providing cover that protects your booking and comply's with the UK's 1992 Package holiday regulations. You'll receive a copy of this with your booking.

Please browse the pages of my website and don't hesitate to get in touch to discuss your requirements. I look forward to welcoming you to the Alps!

Jim Langley, International Mountain Leader

Hi, my name is Jim and I have been leading groups for many years. My work varies massively and has taken me to many places around the world. I’ve lead treks in the European Alps, Iceland, Mongolia, Borneo and Central America and continue to volunteer with my local Mountain Rescue team in Snowdonia, North Wales, UK.
When I’ve got time to myself I enjoy climbing and mountaineering. Journeying is a passion for me and I’ve travelled by bike across New Zealand, Patagonia, the Canary Islands and Morocco and have been on paddling expeditions in Scotland, Sweden, Croatia and Wales both in rivers and on the sea.
My background is as an ecologist and I have a keen eye for birds and alpine flowers. I have taught science and geography to students across Europe and north Africa for over 20 years and never tire of their enthusiasm and the chance to inspire them to appreciate the beautiful and diverse natural world.
